Peru gives its best to Dakar rally
Lima, (ANDINA). Peru offers its geography, monuments and hospitality to the 2013 Dakar and the whole world, President Ollanta Humala said Saturday while attending the symbolic start of this year's Dakar Rally in Lima.
Speaking from the Agua Dulce beach in Lima's Chorrillos district, the president noted that the geography and beauty of the country truly offers some spectacular terrain to host an event of this nature.
"This proves that in Peru we have difficult terrain like that found in North Africa, and we also have highly competitive teams in the race," said the president, who was accompanied by his wife, First Lady Nadine Heredia.
Humala added that there are 26 Peruvian teams competing in the 15-day off-road race, which finishes in Santiago, Chile on Jan. 20.
"This is an important event because some 300 million people around the world will be watching the race, obviously putting Peru on the spotlight," he noted.
