Alberto Fujimori |
Peru UPSIDE-DOWN - Jailed president Alberto Fujimori's health is rapidly deteriorating. In the meantime, over 3,400 terrorists have been released from prison - many of whom have re-engaged into terrorist activities. Adding to the dismay of many Peruvians, the "legal umbrella" of the CVR (Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación - Truth and Reconciliation Comission ) the CIDH (Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos - Interamerican Court for Human Rights), and unrelenting pressure from countless "human rights" NGO's (ONGs) based in Peru, culminated not only in the release of thousands of terrorists, but forced upon the Peruvian government, settlement payments to many of these convicted terrorists, or their families. Terrorism is again in the forefront of Peru's challenges, as terrorists regroup accross the country. The effects of political unrest are already been felt. Conga, the largest mine project has been halted indefinetely. Considering that 60% of Peruvian exports are derived directly from the mining sector, the potential for disaster is just around the corner.
Fujimori's government was widely recognized as the most effective in combating terrorism, and for placing Peru in a clear path towards economic recovery, growth and social justice, after receiving a country literally in shambles from his predecessor Alan Garcia Perez.
